Aircraft Fire Detection – Article Example

Assignment: An aircraft is fitted with smoke detection system to monitor the lavatories among other aircraft compartments for smoke presence, which is a most definite indicative of a fire condition. Lavatory Smoke detection instruments that collect air for sampling are mounted in the aircraft’s lavatory compartment in a strategic location. A lavatory smoke detector system is used where the type of fire anticipated (smoke as the sign) is expected to generate a substantial amount of smoke before the actual temperature changes are high enough to actuate a heat detection system(Mangon, 2001).
Smoke detectors in the aircraft’s lavatory are one of the most fantastic inventions that, it is aimed at saving thousands of lives and millions worth properties including the crafts itself during the transit process. Besides the usual working principle of conventional smoke detectors, 737’s lavatory smoke detector has a unique feature that increases the efficiency of the fire management strategy. Standard smoke detectors consist of two basic parts that are the sensor to sense the smoke and a very loud electronic horn whose primary objective is to alert people. Besides these features, the aircraft’s smoke detectors in the lavatory have an additional feature. The system is connected to the flight deck such that the system has a warning light located on the flight deck so as to warn of smoke in the lavatory. The feature is so special and unique in that if a smoker happens to be in the forward lavatory, smoke can be smelled on the flight deck within seconds. For this particular system, the smoke detector needs not necessarily to give a warning light (Mangon, 2001).
The system in the aircraft is unusual in that it does not have provision for a response to be fitted outside the lavatory above the door. Having a direct connection to the flight deck enables smoke to be detected early in advance confirming the area of origin without fitting any response outside. The smoke detection systems in the aircraft’s lavatory ensure a significant reduction of false alarms.
