How Does Nursing Theory Help in Nursing Practice? This is a short overview of how nursing theory is applicable to a practice setting in thatit provides structure and reasoning processes that funnel all necessary actions towards a common goal – the patient’s eventual state of wellness. These theories and guidelines also ensure that a step is not missed and that all points in any procedures are followed.
Using nursing theory in a practice setting allows for nurses to think in a constructive and logical manner in obtaining information about the patient on a number of levels. Theory in practice is a guidance tool that avoids unnecessary procedures and gets to the heart of particulars in a case. While it is good to study as many nursing theories as possible, it is also important to use those which are most applicable to the type of nursing practice involved.
The Professional Practice Model (PPM) for the University of North Carolina Hospitals was developed in 2008 and is specifically based on caring theories. Containing five levels of caring, it addresses the nurse’s capacity for caring, the nurse’s commitment to caring, supportive environment for nurse’s caring methods, actions based on knowing, being with the patient, doing for the patient, providing and maintaining a belief system for the patient (Tonges & Ray, 2011, p. 374).
This is the basis of just about any type of nursing practice and other theories and philosophies can be added on along the way within the practice setting. The more a nurse can study and understand the different theories and analyze how they can be applied to practice settings, the better and more effective a nurse is in providing efficient and caring services to all patients (Reed, 2007, p.1).
Theory in practice settings provides infrastructures that a nurse follows after the initial caring process which is the guidance for observing details through observations, provides explanations for patient phenomena, predict outcomes and to provide the solutions for that outcome (McEwen & Wills, 2010, p. 375). Using such theories and processes provides an efficient method towards a quick stabilization and recovery for the patient, particularly when a positive attitude is also provided with the solutions.
