Task Retrenchment or an impending downsizing is a one nightmare that managers always dread. But when that time comes, decisionshave to be made in the interests of a company and the future image of the company must be taken into consideration. Retrenchment is not a new thing in organisations but the way it is handled would determine the boomerang effect this would have in the organisation. Most importantly, I would try to not to get any disappointing information out there that may derail the team from completing the immediate task-merger.
One of the first to do and which I would opt to do is to establish the communication systems that work best with the target group in this case the group that is to be downsized. This I would do by identifying the most trusted and favourite member of the team. It is always important to do this because if I don’t, the possibility of the IT team getting this information through rumours is high. In this case I wouldn’t be able to control the reaction that the IT team are going to exhibit. Dealing with their most trusted team member will help in getting the anticipated feedback from the rest of the team and thus help in tailoring the exit strategy for this team.
According to the two-way symmetrical model of communication feedback is one of the most important aspects of a communication episode more so in a crisis such as this. The immediate thing thereafter is to establish a team that will oversee their retrenchment. The immediate duties will be to explain the reasons for retrenchment, the position of the company in the matter and how their continued stay may impact negatively on the general performance of the company. The team will also draw in collaboration with the trusted team above, a compensation plan that will be comfortable to both the organisation and the employees. This team must put in place legal measures to forestall any possible court processes.
With the above measures I would have set the ball rolling for a smooth process. What kills such processes is allowing rumours and propaganda before the truth and the systematic communication of the same is established. As stated above, the essentials of the process will be determined by how the team would first react to this news.
