Writer's Choice – Assignment Example

Jeffrey reported about the lowest average first quarter GDP growth under the Obama administration. He argued that President Obama has the lowest average first quarter GDP growth of all U.S. presidents. Jeffrey (2015) stated:
In the first quarter of 2009, GDP declined at an annual rate of -5.4 percent. In the first quarter of 2010, it grew by 1.7 percent. In the first quarter of 2011, it declined -1.5 percent. In the first quarter of 2012, it grew 2.3 percent. In the first quarter of 2013, it grew 2.7 percent. In the first quarter of 2014, it declined -2.1 percent. And in the first quarter of 2015, it declined -0.7 percent.
These figures actually came from the U.S. Department of Commerce, Bureau of Economic Analysis, so they can be believed as accurate. Nevertheless, Jeffrey (2015) framed the statistics in a sarcastic manner by mentioning that the news (specifically other media agencies) keep blaming it on the cold weather. In his conclusion, he stated: “Should the long-term decline in U.S. economic growth be attributed to cold weather? Or should people in Washington, D.C., start looking around them for an anthropogenic cause.” He is saying that Obama could not blame bad weather all the time, and instead, the President should blame himself for the dismal economic growth of the nation. Moreover, the potential issues related to this statistic are blaming Obama’s healthcare policies and spending as the main source of the decline of GDP growth rate and further eroding the popularity of the Democrats in upcoming elections. Jeffrey (2015) is a Republican and he could be writing in favor of the Republican Party. Furthermore, as Furman (2015) pointed out, critics cannot blame Obama’s policies and programs per se, particularly when bad weather, higher savings, and decline in trade balance have significant independent effects on the GDP. Hence, this statistic is a good example of how journalists use statistics to promote their political beliefs and parties.
