Students from countries with no clear regulations on plagiarism find it difficult to cope with the pressure to reference their works effectively (James & Tamara, 2001).
Issue 2: Plagiarism is attributed to cultural differences and epitomizes poor communication skills. Students study under intense pressure from the society as parents expect them to perform well despite the disparity in their abilities. Such compel students to copy other people’s work either intentionally or unintentionally. Whichever the reason, plagiarism is both an academic irregularity and a criminal offence that affects the quality of education.
Solution 1: Among the most effective solutions to plagiarism is introducing the concept in communication skills, a course that every student in college and university should undertake. This way, it becomes mandatory for the students to conform to the rules of attribution, referencing, and paraphrasing (David, 2009).
Solution 2: Additionally, since plagiarism is a cultural concept, it equally demands a complete cultural overhaul to address. The colleges and universities must change the cultures of the international students and conform them to the dictates of education in the United States. The colleges and universities should also organize talks and civil education to parents and other educational stakeholders in a bid to reduce the pressure on students.
Evaluation of the solutions: While both the solutions are realistic and have the potential of addressing the vice, they require both collaboration and orientation from the students. This way, the university instils the new academic culture in the students thus eliminating the effects of culture shocks and fear (Menager & Paulos, 2010).
