Summary – Book Report/Review Example
Learning, Styles, Freedom, and Oppression Summary Simon Benlow in the book learning, styles, freedom, and oppression argue that every student can be placed in a certain group depending on his supposed skills of learning. Simon emphasizes on the trend and motivates teaches to accept it. He provides various illustrations to prove that his trend is magnificent.
Simon argues that their rulers oppressed people in the Soviet Union during the cold war. Their rulers did not oppress Americans, but they run towards oppression and control willingly (Simon, Pp 72). He suggests that people are charmed with a ring of truth that accompanies simplicity because they live in a disoriented society. Young children are given battery tests that recommend careers thus, learning tracks.
College curriculum is changing from potential to career paths corresponding to learning styles. Currently the Generation that comes to college is not told what they are expected to do (Simon, Pp 73). After undergoing through multiple-choice surveys, students are told how they think and how they will think in the future.
Simon argues that beyond the wild reductionism of education, there are logical flaws that provide the basis to learning styles (Simon, Pp 74). This reduces years of research that shows a significant connection between social economic factors and education. He argues that there is no correlation between liking something and learning from it, but the opposite is rational.
The surveys do not give emphasize on the impact of situational plans on learning. Research has shown that even when individuals choose among the alphabetical letters; this does not reflect the truth of their behavior or anything outside survey question. This argument is not for discussions invalidity only. Students ought to shun the fad due to the implications they experience.
