College The Past in the Present The Epic of Gilgamesh s back to 2000 B.C.E. The notable character, Enkidu,is the son of Gilgamesh. Enkidu is barbaric and lives in the wild. His father, Gilgamesh, sends the palace prostitute to seduce and tame him. This expected transformation of Enkidu from a wild man to a civilized person marks the historic transformation in the culture of ancient Mesopotamia. The prostitute teaches Enkidu the manners of living like a civil man. Since that time, the character of Enkidu has been referred to throughout history as a rough barbaric person. This character is portrayed in modern society in many forms. The famous Hollywood movie Star Trek mentions this character and his attributes. Captain Jean-Luc Picard comments on the story of Enkidu and Gilgamesh as a parallel to the story of Darmok and Jalad. Other than Hollywood adaptations, the character of Enkidu is very popular in video game genre. The games Dragon Wars and Final Fantasy use this character as their main attraction. In Dragon Wars the character of Enkidu is the druids’ patron. Similarly the game Civilization III: Conquests has a unit named Enkidu Warrior. Fierce barbaric nature of the character has always been an inspiration in the fiction genre. Computer games with heavy action find the character well suited for their needs. It is also true that each depiction is a little different from the other. Fiction genre is supposed to exaggerate and modify characters according the need. Enkidu will probably continue to be the famous barbaric warrior like Conan and Sindbad.
