A Case Study: Union Pacific Retires Big Iron A case study of Union Pacific, regarding a significant change in technology adoption and the future plans underpins that in 1964, the largest railroad franchise of North America, purchased mainframe computers from IBM. With the adoption and utilization of this technology, UP controlled car-scheduling, transactions and car pick up deliveries via a computerized system (Stair and Reynolds). With the passage of time, UP provided additional and efficient services with the assistance of centralized computer-aided dispatching system for managing UP railway network. However, current report reveals that information technology professionals working with UP railway system have decided to replace Big Iron system with Distributed System, which is attributed with more advanced, feasible and speedy characteristics, as this system is made up of hundreds of Blade Servers (Stair and Reynolds 154).
IT professionals have recommended use of Blade Server technology over Big Iron system mainly because it was quite difficult for UP to manage 11 million lines of antiquated assembler codes responsible for running Big Iron. However, new Blade Servers run system through Linux Operative Technology with the assistance of reengineered codes, which are handled by newly graduate IT professionals. These reengineered codes also help UP professionals to provide customers with the detailed information (Stair and Reynolds 132). For the implementation of this new system, the company needs to ensure that the existence of the software, which can easily meet the needs of this new Blade Server system. Contribution of proficient IT professionals and development of advance software is needed for running new system to service company for a long term.
