ANALYSIS OF THE RELATIONSHIPS AMONG TESTS AND SCALES Over the years, researchers from different backgrounds have used tests extensively to measure performance and results (Schut, F. T., & Hassink, 2002). Most of the time also, tests have been used to gain results to draw or design scales. With this, the implication is that there is a close relationship between tests and scales whereby tests are used to come out with scales to influence decision making. In a typical example, a class teacher could use standardized test to scale his students in order of mastery over a particular subject (National Center for Fair and Open Testing, 2012).
In all cases, the type of tests and scales used have also had a great relationship with population and thereby, on the reliability and validity of the test selected (Porter, 2000). Another example that can be sighted in this instance is the use of standards references test. In standards reference tests, content standards are set and students are made to write a test to measure their mastery over the said curriculum content. In such as a situation, the relationship that the test and scale would have on population is that results that come out of the test cannot be generalized for other regions where there are different demands for their curriculum expectation (Research Methods in the Social Sciences, 2011, P. 423).
In conclusion, it would be said that the reliability and validity of a given test type, such as the standards reference test can only be guaranteed if researchers and testers would be in a position to justify the linkage between the content of the curriculum they measure to the immediate needs of the population. For instance if an English born is tested in French language and a French born student is tested in French language using the same standards reference test, it cannot be expected that results of comparison between the two students can be rendered valid if the students are compared one to another (National Center for Fair and Open Testing, 2012). Rather, the results can be considered to be valid if the results are compared to how much each student has individually mastered the subject area.
