The behavioral theory of leadership focuses on the behaviors of leaders and assumes that they can be made and not necessarily born. It assumes that certain successful leaders have some specific attributes. One of them is courage. According to this theory, great leaders must be courageous enough to make decisions that might be unpopular at times and to do the right thing even when doing the wrong thing seems easier. Contingency theory of leadership states that the leader’s actions and decisions are dependent on various situations and the followers. One dominant trait of such leaders is flexibility and adaptability. Leaders who conform to this theory of leadership are open-minded and prepared to change their mind and adapt to different situations. They understand that there’s no specific right or wrong way and a solution that works in a certain situation might not be effective in another. Contemporary leadership emphasizes on progressive ideals that involve equality and collaboration. Contemporary leaders collaborate with subordinates to be productive as opposed to dictating them and being autocratic. Such leaders are characterized by strong emotional intelligence. They know how to interact with different social circles while at the same time being firm in decision making. They don’t make rash decisions and have the ability to understand and handle other people’s emotions. This makes them relatable and approachable by other people and make for a much more pleasant.
The most effective managers have some common traits, including possession of strong communication skills and the ability to instruct as well as listen to their subordinates, their teams and their superiors. They are adaptable to changes, and are able to build good relationships with their teams. Managers also are motivators to others by acting as role models as well as providing training and inspirational opportunities for others. Bill Gates is a fine example of an effective and productive manager. Leaders are confident often portraying lots of poise and confidence (Northouse, 2010).
They are energetic, optimistic, zealous, charming and motivated. Good leaders also carry out their activities with honesty and integrity. A well-known leader is Barrack Obama, who is the president of the USA. He’s well-known for his integrity, good communication skills and charisma. Managers and leaders have differences. First, managers have subordinates under them who they lead by the formal power given to them, whereas leaders have followers who follow them voluntarily. Leaders create change and persuade people; managers react to changes and communicate to the people. The major difference overall is that managers wield power over other people. Leaders on the other hand develop that power with people.
