Informal Leadership & followership An informal leader is one who by his own position within an organization or work unit is perceived by his peers. Informal leaders play an important role within the organization as he or she is perceived as someone who is followed for some reasons. One of the key differences between the formal as well as informal leaders is that an informal leader does not hold the position of any power or any formal authority within the organization. (Hickman, 2009)
Informal leaders are considered as hidden assets for the organizations with the potential to provide the competitive advantage to the organization. Because of their ability to provide leadership to the organization, the followers tend to respect them because of their position within the organization. They attract followers and respect because of their unique position and how they are perceived by their team members or colleagues. Due to this they become more like persons who could generate competitive advantage for the firms because of their ability to influence their followers. (Blunt, 2008)
For example, employees in Toyota are considered as informal leaders because of their stay and experience within the organization. With low employee turnover and higher retention ratio, Toyota’s employees tend to act as informal leaders within their work units. Specially, Toyota uses women to work as informal leaders and take advantage of the new business environment. It has empowered women to actually become the trend setters and have developed an environment wherein teams work effectively through their informal leaders.1
