Introduction To Psychology – Coursework Example
The most arguable area in psychology is human intelligence. The nature vs. nurture contest in the context of the study of human intelligence is by far the most fiercely challenged feature of this field. The nature vs. nurture controversy is all about the effects of genes and environment on intelligence. To what extent is the human intelligence innate, and how far is it learned? It is essential to develop awareness with the basic arguments, strengths, and weaknesses for and against the underlying influences and associates of intelligence.
To measure the influence of genes or environment on an attribute needs to be able to separate the effects of one factor away from that of another, to begin with, attempt to calculate the heritability of an attribute, this measures the extent to which variation among individuals in an attribute is due to variation in the genes those individuals carry. Twins can be studied to determine the involvement of genes and environment to an attribute, adoption also permits disconnect of genes and environment. Environmental inputs influence the expression of genes. The interactions of genes with environment are additional component of the nature-nurture debate. gene-environment correlations indicate that individuals with certain genotypes are more likely to find themselves in certain environments. Evidence suggests that family environmental factors may have an effect upon childhood IQ.
Many feel that the very question opposing nature to nurture is a misleading. If an environment is changed, then the heritability of a character changes, too. On the contrary, if the genetic composition of a population changes, heritability will also change.
