LAN Networks LAN NETWORKS Local Area Networks can be defined as a communication network that that interrelates different data communicating tools that are within a small geographic area (Hodson, 2002). It also broadcasts at a very high and fast data transfer rates. The local area networks is widespread both in academic and commercial environments. The primary function of Local Area Networks is provide adequate access to both hardware and software resources (Hodson, 2002). The hardware and software resources will allow users to file serving, print serving, video transfers, manufacturing support, academic and email support among other uses.
Local Area Networks have advantages which include the ability to share hardware and software resources, access to other LANs and WANs and securing transfers at very high speeds (Hodson, 2002). Disadvantages of LAN include costly equipment and support, interoperation with some types of hardware, it does not interchange packages easily and growing level of maintenance. The first Local Area Network was the Bus/Tree and it is the original topology where data is transferred using either baseband digital signals or broadband analog signals. Another topology is the Star-Wired Bus which is a more modern Local Area Network and it physically looks like a star but logically functions as a bus (Hodson, 2002).
In LAN, there are Medium Access Control Protocols. These are soft wares that allow taking turns of workstations at transmitting data. The protocols are divided into contention based categories and round-robin protocols. The contention based ones operate mainly on first-come first serve basis (Hodson, 2002). An example is the Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection (CSMA/CD). Switches are simple devices that that transmit incoming frame out .The switch has intelligence and it filters out and forwards frames. Transparent switches can be seen with CSMA/CD LANs.
In conclusion, the primary functions of Local Area Network provide common services like file serving and print serving, allow data sharing and peripherals. The topologies of LAN can be seen as either a bus-tree topology, star-wired topology or even a wireless network (Hodson, 2002).
