Leadership Leadership I believe that leaders are born. Leadership is an intrinsic value that persons possess and comparable to talent. Therefore, an individuals environment nurtures the leadership skills and produces the good and bad leaders. I also believe that no amount of education or training makes leader. Instead, such activities only enhance the existing skills in people (Bertocci, 2009).
Leadership is inborn and manifests through an individual’s character. Therefore, personality influences the leadership competencies. A person who learns from mistakes, listens to instructions, and seeks avenues to solve social issues has high chances of becoming a good leader. Proactive people become successful leaders while laggards hinder leadership values in them (Bertocci, 2009).
Leaders and managers have followers who look up to them for direction. They handle teams to facilitate the efficiency of shared task and unite followers for a shared vision. Both of them occupy different capacities in an organization and compliment the roles of one another through motivation, emotional appeal. Other essential tasks performed by leaders and managers include staffing, controlling and organizing. In contrast, leaders take responsibility and inspire followers towards a long-term view while managers enable change in subordinates. Normally, managers are less charismatic people who take little responsibility for the team performance (Bertocci, 2009).
Good communication skill is a valuable asset for successful leaders. A leader interacts with many people including fellow managers, staff, stakeholders and serves as the organizations ambassador. Therefore, they should exhibit good verbal and non-verbal skills, adapt the latest communication pattern and a good listener. The mentioned traits equip leaders with skills to solve organizational challenges and improve a firm’s public image. It also sets the leaders apart and enables them to become role models for the followers. In this regards, an effective communicator is certainly a good leader because he/she understands how to engage and interact with team members. The skills also enable the leader to unite the team for a common purpose (Pauley & Pauley, 2009).
