In dealing with the issue of officers consorting with known drug dealers, the situational leadership method best addresses the problems. The situational leadership theory is a contingency theory that focuses on followers’ maturity (Robbins, 1993). In this case, maturity refers to the ability as well as willingness among the people to take responsibility for directing their own behaviour towards something. Is t follows from the reasoning that officers should display professional behaviour especially during the period when they are on duty. These people should always be exemplary and they should show job maturity. It is the role of the leader to remind the officers to show some form of maturity so that their behaviour can be emulated by the people they serve. A leader who encourages the officers to display job maturity is likely to create mutual understanding with his subordinates. There are likely chances that they will agree with him since they are engaged in a professional way to change their behavior. It can be seen that this strategy does not involve any use of force and there are likely chances of the followers to positively respond to their leader. It is also essential for the leader to encourage the subordinates to display psychological maturity. This will motivate them to do something and they can also respond positively by showing a high degree of willingness to change their behaviour. This approach is ideal in that it encourages interaction between the leader and the subordinates such that mutual understanding between them is likely to be created.
