1. There are various management skills that include the following: forecasting, planning, organizing, communicating, motivating, and controlling, conceptual, interpersonal, and technical. In brief, forecasting pertains to scanning the environment in which the organization operates and anticipate changes while planning relates to the element of laying down the procedures to be followed in the operations of the organization (Strydom, 2004). These elements are very important in the hospitality industry given that it is characterized by various changes. For instance, economic decline in a country can scare away visitors hence the need for management to forecast on such elements. On the other hand, a company that fails to plan will be planning to fail. Organizing is about arranging the tasks of work into manageable components while communication is about the exchange of vital information. Communication is vital since it enables the management to pass important information to different stakeholders. According to Jackson & Schuler (2000), motivation is about encouraging other employees to be productive through offering them rewards or promotion while controlling is about ensuring that their activities are within the anticipated standards. Conceptual, interpersonal and technical are other managerial skills that are specifically centered on individual aspects that determine the capability of the manager to deal with certain issues that require brainstorming and problem solving skills.
2. The general trend in leadership and management during the contemporary period is related to the style. For example, participative leadership style is significantly gaining prominence where both the leaders and the employees play an active role in making the decisions that affect the operations of the company. In the hospitality industry, this helps to create a collective sense of belonging to the company and the efforts of all the members will be directed towards the attainment of the same goals.
