Managing employees and diverse workforce Introduction It is apparent the issue of smoking has been contentiousfor a long time. Although it has become widely acceptable that public and other social gathering should be smoking free zones, the decision not to employ smokers can be termed to be unethical. Even in areas that smoking is prohibited, there have always been areas designated for smokers. This ensures that smokers are not deprived of their rights.
The decision by Pennsylvania Geisinger Health System to refuse to hire smokers can be considered discriminatory, which is against business ethics (Kershnar 88). Many laws across the globe prohibit such kinds of discrimination. Such a decision can be seen as encouraging other forms of discrimination that leads to poor state of many people within the confines of organizations that holds such principles of discrimination (Kershnar 88). The only thing that can lead to expulsion of employees that smoke is when they fail to perform their duties because of the influence of their smoking behavior. In another dimension, it would only be ethical for the health system to designate a place for smokers. They should set laws that govern smoking time and behavior. For instance, they can have regulations that stipulate that smoking during office or working hours is prohibited and punishable.
Any form of discrimination that does not related to work performance should be discouraged as it goes against the spirit of the fight against discrimination across the globe. The health care system should review its stand on the smokers and consider instituting rules that can control smoking behavior that might affect work performance.
