Mixed Methods Study That Is Driven By A Specific Theoretical Lens – Coursework Example
Mixed Methods Study Theoretical frameworks/ conceptual models are theories that provides a focal point from which the unknowns areargued or analyzed. For instance, when relationships are identified between two or more variables, a theory should be articulated to explain why that relationship exists. It is important to note that, theories are formulated, they are never discovered, and they can only be tested but never proven. Further, the role of theoretical models is to test theories, make research findings generalizable and have meaning, predict and control situations, stimulate research and establish orderly links between facts and observations (Creswell, 2009).
For instance, in the research “Advancing the Study of Violence against Women Using Mixed Methods: Integrating Qualitative Methods into a Quantitative Research Program”, Testa et al. (2012), it was noted that the quantitative research originates with pre-determined, instrument-based problems, intended to test a priori hypotheses. On the other hand, qualitative methods characteristically implicate realistic or all-inclusive data gathering through surveillance or from interviews. In their deductions, the researchers resolved that, had it not been through the mixed method approach, they would not have conclusively handled issues on identification of debilitated rape and sexual superiority, heterogeneity on how sexual assaults arise.
In this research, the identifiable theory can be found in the introduction whereby, the researcher wanted to understand the interrelationship between women’s alcohol consumption and their experiences of abuse. The data used was gathered through interviews, and tape recording while the qualitative analysis was based on content analysis and thematic analysis. This resulted to the phenomenon of identification of quantitative risk elements for women’s sexual victimization, normally with undesirably weak results for individual variables, in this case, women’s drinking ( Testa , Livingston, & VanZile-Tamsen, 2011).
The introduction of the qualitative analysis proved important because it factored in and verified that it was sexual primacy, rather than the nature of the association that was a fundamental variable for consideration. A further, inclusion of the sexual precedence in a quantitative analysis of sexual assault outcomes, made the realization that it was the most appropriate predictor of whether penetration transpired ( Testa , Livingston, & VanZile-Tamsen, 2011). This research’s lens shapes clearly follows the Creswell guideline and proves that the mixed method approach is more accurate that either the qualitative or quantitative methods of study.
