Classification of absenteeism as a deviant behavior is correct because absenteeism is contrary to an organization’s expectations from an employee and may be deliberate. Organizational behaviors can be categorized into performance behavior that an organization expects in order to realize its objectives or dysfunctional behavior that hinders an organization’s objectives and are therefore against organizational norms. Even though absenteeism may sometimes be legitimate, arising from such factors as death or sickness of an employee or a member of the employee’s family, some are not legitimate and these identify deviance (Griffin and Moorhead, 2013). Effects of absenteeism on coworkers such as causing inconvenience and anger also identify deviance in the behavior because absentees are aware of such effects. in addition, evidence exists that absenteeism is a form of deviance because of its effects on an organization and because of possible personal decision to be absent despite knowledge of possible consequences to an organization. These arguments, in addition to your approach, could have also qualified absenteeism as an organizational deviant behavior. The role of personal deviance could also explain the relationship between organizational injustice and deviant behavior because employees’ negative attitudes that results from unfair treatment can motivate deviance. Low pay and poor work conditions, factors that identify an organization’s injustice towards its employees, are examples of possible causes of deviance (Fox and Lituchy, 2012).
