The Making of the Modern Woman In the 1950s, when the time the economy flourished in several Western countries, consumer goods were celebrated through advertising. With attractive slogans in various colors, the world of advertising promoted and extensive line of products which promised better standards of living for the nation. It even fueled the Pop Art movement of the late 1950s and 60s which revolutionized advertising with respect to aesthetics and iconography in Pop Art. Through the changes made by this upon culture and economy, however, women had learned to respond by being part of the movement against economic exploitation at the time for what was often seen on TV shows and commercials did not reflect the real women of the period.
Then and now, the growing impact of consumerism and advertising occurs to have quite concealed the actual social issues and settings in which women have become highly involved. Women of the mid-20th century as well as those of today, in most cases, experience being treated either as sex commodities or objects of controversy and oppression, exhibiting the general reality with women’s poor quality of life which is further due to domestic violence and gender discrimination.
Some degree of success was achieved in recent efforts made by campaigns such as ‘Dove for Real Beauty’ in the attempt to support woman’s cause sincerely. It appears though that the media should increase focus on the accuracy of detailing the situation with women which amply needs to be addressed. This ought to proceed on the ground that majority of women at present can be observed weak or low in esteem as they barely cope with modernization. Such is especially true given the negative overall perceptions under which they are measured in terms of socio-political power, motivating potentials, and the frequency of meeting moral objectives set by the conventional society with men.
