Project Milestone The two genres of music selected for analysis will be (a) gangsta rap and (b) new country. The reasons for selecting these twogenres lie in the stark difference between the two forms – the former functions as a mode of expression for the underlying anger and frustrations of the African American race primarily. This has led to a much higher proportion of African Americans in prisons as compared to other racial groups. As opposed to gangsta rap, country music is generally soft and melancholy and tends to be centred around romance and love lorn feelings. This form of music is a reflection of the soft yet rich, elegant and luxuriant lifestyle of the former confederate states, where slavery was prevalent, but where the upper classes indulged in a lifestyle that allowed them plenty of time to dwell on topics such as love. These two genres thereby represent two contrasting ends of the spectrum.
This analysis will examine the two genres cited above on the basis of three major issues, namely (a) sexuality (b) social class and (c) gender. The issue of social class will cover elements such as those mentioned above, i.e, gangsta rap patrons are drawn primarily from African American criminal elements while country music is drawn from white Americans who are the descendants of former slave owners. In terms of gender, the primary difference between the two forms is the slim percentage of females who perform gangsta rap; male African Americans are generally the proponents of gangsta rap and are able to present the raw, seething emotions underlying the racial ethos and identity of their race. As opposed to this, country music has a large percentage of female performers; almost on an equal with male performers and this could also partly be caused by the subject matter of love as opposed to violence and crime in gangsta rap. Lastly, in terms of sexuality, country music expresses the romantic kind of tender, yearning love while gangsta rap is primarily directed towards underlying the masculinity of the performers.
