Water Purification With decreasing supplies of potable water the world over and an ever increasing population combined with a greater and greater strain on existing resources and infrastructure, the demand for clean and pure drinking water is becoming an issue that commands a higher and higher importance with respect to the growth and development of many regions in the world. Although it is an issue that the United States and Western Europe, as well as other developed nations, do not struggle with, the fact of the matter is that a litany of water born diseases are transmitted via impure/unfiltered/unsanitary drinking water supplies every year.
Such a high rate of disease and impurity transference equates to the health of populations the world over being drastically reduced; in turn this equates to lower life expectancy and an increased burden on the fragile healthcare systems of many nations the world over. As such, for many years, scientists and philanthropists alike have been attempting to find low cost alternatives to water purification that can serve to benefit the people of developing countries. One of these low-cost alternatives to traditional water purification is accomplished through the use of an extremely thick mesh that is placed over the lid of a bucket or container of some form or other and allows the user to pour water through the medium as means of trapping a wide variety and high percentage of toxins and microbes that exist within many drinking water supplies.
This particular method is extremely interesting and exciting due to the fact that it incorporates a low-tech approach which insures that even those with a rudimentary understanding of science and/or water filtration can utilize the process to ensure a safer and cleaner drinking water supply. Additionally, due to the fact that the fiber is relatively low cost to produce and distribute, it has the potential to provide a massive benefit to many areas around the world in which discretionary funding is non-existent as a means to purchase and utilize expensive water filtration devices.
