Extraneous Variables Extraneous variables According to Lodico, Spaulding & Voegtle , extraneous variables consist of variables that are unfavorable in nature and are determined by the course of study. Such variables are less influential to the research because they increase chances of inappropriate result even before actual conclusion is drawn. It is the mandate of every researcher to apply the necessary effort that would ensure chances of extraneous variables within the research are as minimal as possible. Most scholars have pointed out that extraneous variables can be neither dependent nor independent variables, but they play bigger roles that influence the overall process an experimenter intends to achieve.
There are several methods applicable by the researchers to reduce chances of extraneous variability in every experiment. For instance, in educational and psychological researchers uses experimental method to examine the effectiveness of the overall study. In such a case, the researcher gets full control of the extraneous variable by reducing both systematic error and random error associated by the design process of the experiment through availing the necessary tools sufficient to tackle each process (Houser, 2012). Besides, some experimenters apply randomization in controlling extraneous variable. Through randomization, researchers assign subjects randomly to the experiment thus enabling equal distribution of extraneous variable effects. Moreover, it enables the research design to gain much effort thus allowing the researcher to identify groups according to their variables and the results. Despite that, fact randomization does not fully eradicate extraneous variables, but it controls its effects to a greater level.
Through proper management of consents and instructions, most researchers successfully control extraneous variables especially the ones that originate. As a result, of human participation that requires treatments of tasks and instructions. Proper management enhances the use of relaxed language of the research that improves natural behavior leading to accurate results. Despite the fact that the use of consent is critical in eliminating extraneous variability, insignificant instructions concerning hypothesis should be avoided since such instructions often call for unnecessary characteristics of the respondents (Houser, 2012).
